So, when brands claim that their plywood is 100% termite-proof, is there any truth to it?
Yes, there is some truth to these claims, but it largely depends on the quality and credibility of the brand. Reputed manufacturers treat their plywood with anti-termite chemicals, which significantly reduce the risk of termite attacks.However, if your home has high moisture levels, relying only on termite-resistant plywood is not enough. In such cases, we always recommend getting regular anti-termite treatment for your home.Remember, termites don’t attack only plywood—they can also damage solid wood. By carrying out anti-termite treatment at regular intervals, you can keep your plywood furniture protected, durable, and in excellent condition for many years.

The hot press machine plays a crucial role in the plywood manufacturing process. The adhesive used to bond the veneer layers is activated only under high temperature and pressure.Typically, the adhesive is heated to around 120°C to 140°C. At this temperature, it melts, cures, and forms a strong crystalline bond between the veneer layers.This process ensures that the plywood is firmly bonded, making it stronger, more durable, and resistant to delamination.
That’s why hot pressing is one of the most critical steps in manufacturing high-quality plywood.

Face veneer is the topmost decorative layer of plywood—the surface that you can actually see after the plywood is manufactured.
Typically, a 0.30 mm thick veneer is applied to both the front and back surfaces of the plywood. This outer layer is called the face veneer because it gives the plywood its final appearance, smooth finish, and grain pattern.
Once the face veneer is applied, the inner core layers are completely covered and are no longer visible. That’s why the visible surface of the plywood is known as the face veneer.

It is very important for plywood to have uniform thickness throughout the sheet. If the thickness is uneven, the panels will not align properly when you build shelves, wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, or any modular furniture. As a result, some sections may protrude while others remain recessed, leading to a poor finish.
On the other hand, when the plywood has consistent thickness, all the panels fit together perfectly. The joints remain flush, the edges align properly, and the furniture looks clean, premium, and professionally finished.
That’s why uniform plywood thickness is essential for achieving high-quality, well-finished furniture.

It is not recommended to place plywood sheets directly on the floor.
The main reason is that most floors are not perfectly level. If plywood is stored directly on an uneven surface, it can develop bending or warping over time due to uneven support.
To avoid this, plywood sheets should always be stored on wooden battens or pallets so that they receive proper and even support. This helps maintain a flat and smooth surface, even when additional weight is placed on top of the stack.
Proper storage ensures that the plywood retains its original shape and delivers the best performance when used in furniture or interior applications.

Using the wrong or a dull blade can cause chipping, where the edges of the plywood break or splinter. It may also damage the face veneer, resulting in rough edges and an uneven surface. This affects the final finish, making it difficult to achieve a clean look when applying laminate or veneer. Always use a sharp, high-quality blade to ensure smooth cuts, protect the plywood, and achieve a professional finish.

The area under the kitchen sink is exposed to the highest amount of water and moisture, making it the most vulnerable part of the kitchen. Continuous dampness can lead to fungal growth, followed by an increased risk of termite infestation. If a weak or unsuitable board is used, visible damage may appear within a year in many cases. To improve durability, it is recommended to use WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) or PVC boards in the sink area. Their plastic content provides better resistance to water and moisture, helping extend the life of your kitchen cabinets and reducing future repair costs.

Yes, absolutely. Termites don’t attack only plywood—they can also damage wood, paper, books, stationery, and cotton-based materials. While termite-resistant plywood provides added protection, it does not protect your entire home. For long-term safety, it is recommended to get professional termite treatment at regular intervals. Since most termite treatments are effective for 3–5 years, renewing the treatment approximately every 3 years is a good practice to help protect your furniture, belongings, and the structure of your home.

E0 and E1 are Formaldehyde Emission classifications for wood panel products such as plywood, MDF, and particle board. Formaldehyde is a gas that may be released in small amounts from the resin used in these products.

  • E0 indicates very low formaldehyde emission and is considered one of the safest categories.
  • E1 also represents low formaldehyde emission and is widely accepted for residential and commercial interiors.
  • E2 has higher formaldehyde emission than E1, making it less suitable for sensitive indoor environments.

If your home has children, elderly family members, or people with allergies or respiratory concerns, choosing E0-grade panels is generally a better option. The lower the formaldehyde emission, the better the indoor air quality and the healthier your living environment.

Yes, gloss laminate can be applied directly on plywood. However, the final finish depends on the quality of the plywood. If you use non-calibrated plywood with an uneven surface, light reflections may reveal slight waves or undulations. Using a thicker laminate can reduce this effect, but the best solution is calibrated plywood, which provides a perfectly smooth and premium finish.

Some architects also recommend fixing a 3 mm HDHMR board over plywood before applying gloss laminate. However, if you’re already using high-quality calibrated plywood, this extra layer is usually unnecessary. In fact, while your plywood may be waterproof, HBMR is not fully waterproof, which could create issues in moisture-prone areas.

When buying plywood, don’t focus only on the price or thickness. The first thing you should check is the brand stamping on the plywood, which tells you which company manufactured the product.

Next, search for the brand online. Check whether the company has an official website, a strong market presence, and detailed product information. This will help you evaluate the brand’s credibility.

While visiting the dealer, ask for the company’s brochure, product catalogue, warranty, guarantee, and certifications. A trustworthy brand is always transparent about its product quality and provides proper documentation to support its claims.

A reliable plywood brand doesn’t just sell a product—it builds trust through quality, certifications, and after-sales support. That’s why verifying the brand is just as important as checking the plywood itself.

Both IS 710 BWP and IS 303 BWP are Boiling Water Proof (BWP) plywood grades designed for water-resistant applications. However, with the latest BIS amendment, the performance standards for IS 710 BWP have become more stringent. If your project involves continuous or excessive water exposure, such as industrial or extremely wet environments, IS 710 BWP is the recommended choice. For normal residential and commercial applications, including kitchens and other areas with regular water exposure, IS 303 BWP is also a safe, durable, and reliable option. The right choice depends on the application and level of water exposure, not just the grade.

 The easiest way to check the density of plywood is by using the simple formula Density = Weight ÷ Volume. First, take a small sample piece of the plywood and measure its weight using a weighing scale. Next, measure its length, breadth, and thickness to calculate its volume (Length × Breadth × Thickness). Finally, divide the weight by the volume to get the density.

A higher or lower density alone does not determine whether a plywood is good or bad, but density is an important parameter for comparing materials and understanding their overall characteristics. For accurate results, always use precise measurements and ensure the sample is dry and free from moisture.

Don’t focus only on the 15, 20, or 25-year warranty period. Always read the Terms & Conditions mentioned on the warranty certificate. Many companies include conditions that can make your warranty claim invalid, such as cutting or modifying the plywood, improper installation, or other exclusions. Choose a brand that offers clear, practical, and customer-friendly warranty terms. A warranty is truly valuable only if you can easily claim it when you need it most.

Start by verifying the brand’s credibility. A genuine plywood brand usually has an official website, online presence, product information, and customer reviews. Simply having a stamp or logo on the sheet does not make it a trusted brand.

Next, check the serial number. Most reputed plywood manufacturers assign a unique serial number to every sheet. Compare the serial numbers on two or three sheets—if each sheet has a different serial number that follows the company’s pattern, it is generally a good indication that the plywood is genuine. Always purchase from an authorized dealer and verify the warranty or guarantee certificate before making your purchase.

Yes. In India, BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification is mandatory for manufacturing plywood. BIS is the national quality standards authority that ensures products meet prescribed safety and quality requirements. Every certified plywood manufacturer is issued a CML (Certification/Company Manufacturing Licence) Number, which authorizes the company to manufacture and sell plywood.

Additionally, different types of plywood are covered under specific BIS standards, such as IS 710 (Marine/BWP  Grade), IS 303 (Commercial Grade), and IS 5509, depending on their intended application and performance requirements. Therefore, whenever you buy plywood, always check for the ISI Mark and the CML Number to ensure that you are purchasing a genuine, BIS-certified product.

Recognizing cheap plywood is easier than most people think if you know what to check. Start by verifying the brand’s credibility. Look for the brand online to see if it has a proper website, product information, certifications, and a genuine market presence. Next, check the weight of the plywood. An 18mm sheet that is significantly lighter than expected may indicate lower density and compromised quality. You should also inspect the cut edge to examine the layers. High-quality plywood has uniform, well-bonded veneers with minimal gaps. Finally, perform a knocking test. A good plywood sheet produces a sharp, solid sound, while a poor-quality sheet often sounds hollow or dull. These simple checks can help you identify cheap plywood and avoid costly mistakes.

The first thing is delivery. Always check whether the company delivers material on time. If deliveries are delayed, you’ll have to keep extra stock, which blocks your money and increases inventory costs.

The second thing is market competition. Plywood has limited profit margins, so avoid choosing a brand that is available in every shop. Too much competition leads to price wars and lower profits. Instead, choose a brand that offers good distributor support and better market opportunities.

A truck carrying plywood often takes 3–4 days to reach its destination. During this time, the sheets face continuous vibration and heavy load. If the plywood is not packed properly, the pressure from the top can cause bending or warping, which affects its quality and finish.

Improper loading doesn’t just damage the plywood—it can also disturb the truck’s weight balance, making transportation unsafe and increasing the risk of accidents.

That’s why proper packing, secure strapping, and balanced loading are essential. They protect the plywood from damage, ensure safe transportation, and help deliver the product to the customer in perfect condition.

 Yes, but it depends on how long the plywood is exposed to sunlight.

If plywood receives normal natural sunlight, it usually doesn’t cause any major damage. In fact, a little sunlight helps reduce moisture, which can lower the risk of termites and fungal growth, as they thrive in dark and damp environments.

However, if plywood is exposed to intense sunlight and rain continuously for a long period, its surface may fade, develop slight warping, and the finish can start to deteriorate.

The answer is both yes and no, because it completely depends on the grade of plywood you are using.

Plywood is available in different grades, such as MR (Moisture Resistant), BWR (Boiling Water Resistant), and BWP (Boiling Water Proof).

If you have installed MR-grade plywood in an area that is constantly exposed to water or moisture, it can absorb moisture over time. The first sign is swelling, and with prolonged exposure, the layers may start to separate, reducing the strength and durability of the plywood.

On the other hand, BWR and BWP-grade plywood are specially designed to resist water. Under normal usage, they do not swell easily and provide much better durability in wet conditions.

If you’re using HDHMR board, keep in mind that it has excellent moisture resistance, but it is not completely waterproof. If it remains exposed to water for a long period, it can also develop swelling.

So, the simple answer is: if the material is waterproof, the chances of swelling are very low. But if it is not waterproof and is exposed to water continuously, swelling is likely to occur.

Calibrated Plywood is processed through a calibration machine, ensuring uniform thickness and a perfectly smooth surface. Its thickness variation is usually around ±0.25 mm, making it ideal for high-gloss laminates, acrylic sheets, veneers, and Duco/PU paint finishes. It also delivers a more premium and refined furniture finish.

Normal Plywood is not machine-calibrated, so it may have slight thickness variations or minor surface unevenness. However, it is still strong, durable, and a cost-effective choice for regular furniture where an ultra-smooth finish is not required.
